MILI
La mili is the colloquial term used in Spain to refer to the compulsory military service (servicio militar) which men are drafted into at 18. Exemption is possible on medical grounds and in certain family situations, while students and those living abroad can obtain a deferment (prórroga) which allows them to put off doing their military service until a more convenient time. Conscientious objectors (objetores de conciencia) can choose to do a longer period of community service, known as Prestación Social Sustitutoria (PSS) instead of military service. Over recent years, the length of la mili has been reduced to the current nine months, but there is still plenty of opposition to it and the number of those who refuse to do either military or community service, called insumisos, has increased. Plans are in place to phase out military service and establish a professional army.
