La mili, military service, is compulsory in Spain although the number of months' service has been reduced and recruits are now posted close to their home town. There continues to be strong opposition from objetores de conciencia, conscientious objectors, who are obliged to do Prestación Social Sustitutoria in place of military service; this usually involves doing community service and lasts longer. Those who refuse to do either of these, los insumisos, can be sent to prison.
