The Camino de Santiago is a medieval pilgrim route stretching from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain, where tradition has it the body of the Apostle James is buried. Nowadays it is a popular tourist route as well as a religious one. The concha (cockleshell) is a symbol of the Camino de Santiago, because it is said that when St James' body was found it was covered in shells.
