23-F refers to the attempted coup d'état carried out in the Cortes on 23 February 1981 by a group of Guardias Civiles led by Lt. Colonel Antonio Tejero and supported by certain sectors of the army. Members of the Spanish Parliament were held hostage overnight, the national TV station - TVE - was taken over by the military and forced to broadcast nothing but military music and, in some big cities, the army took up positions on the streets. In his role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces King Juan Carlos defused the situation by reassuring army commanders that the coup did not have his backing and by pledging his support for democracy. The rebels surrendered the following morning.
