The Spanish Documento Nacional de Identidad is a laminated plastic ID card which is renewable every 5 or 10 years, depending on the age of the holder. All Spanish nationals over the age of 14 are required to carry this card, which has their photo, fingerprints and personal details, at all times, and must be able to produce it to the police on request. As a legal document it is commonly used as proof of identity, for instance when opening a bank account, and it can be used instead of a passport for travelling around the EU. In Spain it is commonly known as the DNI, or else carnet (de identidad). In Latin America a similar card is called the cédula (de identidad).
